Prophylactic vaccination to prevent various infectious diseases has been successful using attenuated copies of a virus in a vaccin, thereby activating and boosting the immune system in case a real virus enters the body after vaccination. This vaccination method however showed not to be successful in case of treatment of chronic infectious diseases (such as HCV, HIV, etc.) or cancer.

AlgoNomics' approach is to focus on chronic infectious diseases and cancer that can not be treated with this whole antigen vaccination method. Instead of using the whole antigen, only the most important antigen fragments will be the basis for vaccination. A careful selection of these most important antigen fragments (or called antigen-specific epitopes) will be the essential ingredient of the vaccin, so that the human immune system will be stimulated against these specific epitopes. The human cellular immune system will after vaccination aggresively respond to an infection or cancer, generating activated cytotoxic T cells (CTL) and helper T cells (HTL) directed to these specific epitopes. It has been observed in various individuals that the cellular immune system is able to clear chronic viral infections or regress tumors.

Epibase® is AlgoNomics technology platform to select the relevant specific epitopes. Selection of only the relevant epitopes allows to control the activation of the immune system (for instance to specifically fine-tune the immune response, and to select epitopes that will not be effected by mutation of a virus and even multiple antigens cocktails can be formulated). Compared to whole antigen vaccines, safety is increased as the epitopes are not expected to have pathological side effects.
